Declared a National Historic Site of Canada in 1988, the Distillery District is a collection of Victorian-era industrial architecture. Founded in 1832, the Gooderham and Worts Distillery is a major producer and exporter of whisky. With decades of winding down distillery operations and deindustrialization, distillery operations ceased in 1990.
Through redevelopment and reinvestment, the Distillery District is now a tourist destination. Since 1990, the site has served as location for television and film productions.
