"The Big Island" or the island of Hawai`i (not to be confused with the official state of Hawaii as a whole) is the largest and southeasternmost island of the state. The city of Hilo, located on the eastern and windward side of the island, is the largest city in the county of Hawai`i. Stunning waterfalls, beaches and exciting volcanic activity await visitors.
Stunning Akaka Falls. The 135-meter free-falling waterfalls can be seen in several points along a loop trail of lush tropical green vegetation. The Guide was kidding on which direction to take on the loop: easy then difficult, or difficult then easy. Regardless, the views of the waterfalls make the challenge worth it.
Equally stunning is the cascading Kahuna Falls. Both Akaka and Kahuna are the main attractions of the Akaka Falls State Park.
Waiānuenue Falls or Rainbow Falls is another waterfall gem on the big island. Rising at just 24 meters, the water falls to a large pool below. There is no fee to see this falls.
This is the Leleiwi Park, just a short drive from Hilo International Airport. And yes, that's my face as I spot a green turtle so close. Don't worry as I am just admiring from a distance.
