Saint John is the oldest incorporated city in Canada, established by royal charter in 1785. Located in the Bay of Fundy in the province of New Brunswick, Saint John is an important seaport city and Canada's third largest port in terms of tonnage. French colonist Samuel de Chaplain landed at the harbour in 1604, during the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, thereby naming the place Saint John. This is the Queen Square Farmers' Market with the statue of Samuel de Chaplain in the middle.

This is the site of the original city, now known as the Trinity Royal Heritage Conservation Area. Together with the central business district, they are collectively known simply as Uptown. Much of this area consists of Victorian brick buildings such as the one at my back.

Saint John City Market is the oldest Farmers' Market continuously operating in Canada with a charter dating to 1785. Noticeable is the market's ceiling made of wooden trusses, designed to look like an inverted ship's keel.

The Saint John River is a 673 kilometers long river flowing from the northern Maine to Canada and empties to the Atlantic Ocean. A phenomenon known as reversing falls occurs due to the tremendous rise and fall of the tides and as the river runs through a narrow gorge before emptying at the Bay of Fundy. Here during the boat ride, the noticeable tides and what looks like a whirlpool occurs. Exciting and a bit scary, I have to admit.
