The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, located at downtown Halifax, is one of the many attractions along the Halifax Harbourwalk. The museum is the oldest and largest maritime museum in Canada. One of its popular exhibits is for the RMS Titanic. Nova Scotia played an important role in the recovery efforts of the bodies of the Titanic tragedy. Halifax is the closest city to the sinking with direct rail and steamship connections.

Of the more than 1,500 victims from the Titanic tragedy, only 333 bodies were recovered mostly by ships chartered by Canada with 5 retrieved by a passing North Atlantic steamship. Here at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery lies the final resting place for some of the bodies.

Most of the unidentified victims were buried with a simple number as marker, based on the order in which the body was retrieved. One curious marker, identified as J. Dawson gained infamy for sharing the name with the main character from the film inspired by the Titanic tragedy. However, director of the movie, Director James Cameron, confirmed that the character Jack was not inspired by J. Dawson. Research has revealed that the grave for J. Dawson belonged to Joseph Dawson, an Irishman who worked in the boiler room of the Titanic.

Halifax is home to Irish settlers dating back to pre-famine years. The Irish immigrants, from labourers to tradesmen, to leaders in business, politics and education, helped shape Halifax to what it is now. Irishtown spanning from Lower Water Street to Barrington Street running along the waterfront, through the initiative of the Irish Association of Nova Scotia, has been designated a cultural district.
