The September 11 attacks, or simply 9/11, marked a painful memory in modern day history. The carefully choreographed attack on the Towers of the World Trade Center through hijacked flights American Airlines Flight 11 flying through the North Tower and United Airlines Flight 175 flying through the South Tower, left an unforgettable mark in the year 2001 up to the present time. Terrorist group Al-Qaeda through the leadership of Osama bin Laden orchestrated the attacks on the World Trade Center. This is the World Trade Center Memorial Fountain, designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker. A design competition was organized for a fitting memorial to 9/11. Arad and Walker's entry "Reflecting Absence," incorporates 2 man-made pools to comprise the footprints of the the two towers. Man-made waterfalls cascading to the pool meant to mute the sounds of the city. Landscape architect Peter Walker planted many parts of the memorial with white oaks.  More than 400 swamp white oak trees fill the Memorial plaza, enhancing the site's reflective nature. The memorial opened to the public on September 12, 2011, 10 years after the attack.

Officially named the National September 11 Memorial & Museum or the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, visitors get a chance to visit the memorial fountains, and see artifacts in the museum, such as the survivors' staircase and the Last Column standing.
