Central Park is a model for the world's urban parks. With an area covering 341 hectares of green space, it is the lung of Manhattan. Its size, location, not to mention the countless movies filmed in the park, earned it designations as National Historic Landmark in 1963 and New York City scenic landmark in 1974. The Wollman Rink provides a dazzling view of the Manhattan skyline.
Balto was a Siberian Husky and a hero sled dog. During the Great Race of Mercy in 1925, dog breeder Leonhard Seppala led a team of sled dogs transporting diphtheria antitoxin from Anchorage, Alaska to Nenana, Alaska to combat an outbreak of the disease. Pets are welcome at dedicated areas of Central Park.
The "Imagine" mosaic located at the Strawberry Fields memorial is dedicated to the late artist John Lennon. The mosaic is a donation from Italy.
One of the most iconic and well known features of Central Park is the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain.
On top of the fountain is the sculpture "Angel of the Waters." At the dedication ceremony for the Fountain in 1873, American sculptor Emma Stebbins revealed that the sculpture’s angel was inspired by a Bible passage in the Gospel of John that describes an angel blessing the Pool of Bethesda and giving it healing powers.
